For this project, we were tasked with concepting and modeling a scary / spooky / creepy creature using techniques discussed in class, such as blocking and sculpting, armatures, and animation.
As soon as I learned about this project, I knew my goal would be to create Kyle.
Kyle is what I named a character from my RPG game, Call of Cthulhu (like DnD), that my character Bernadette, the yellow queen, crafted using my new abilities. With the body of our slain enemy, Bernadette carefully and magically sewed together this beast, a bag man, with a sewn up sack for a head, whom I named Kyle.
In the game, Kyle fed off of crushing the life out of anything he could get his hands on (with my permission, of course), and listened to my every command. He saved our life many times throughout our combat.
I began by sketching out Kyle as I had always imagined him. I knew he would be large, and incredibly muscular, yet somehow sort of pudgy and kiddish. After all, he did call me mother.
Once he was sketched, I began to build out his mesh using a skin modifier. I used the sketch as a background reference to get sizing and proportions correct.
I pretty quickly got to sculpting, as I knew this would take up a lot of time. I tried to give him a balance between muscles and kiddish features, but he still looks pretty ripped.
I then went on to add his clothing and cinderblock shoes.
After detail was added, I started going in to vertex painting his clothing, sewn up head, and grayish body.
I continued to add in detail and lighting. At this point, my computer was heavily struggling. Every stroke of painting I made was lagged and inaccurate. I eventually had to call it after crashing my computer 3 times in the span of a couple hours. I would like to go in and add more detail on a better computer.
One other thing I was unable to complete was the chains surrounding his hands and feet that lead to a ball on the end. I tried a couple methods that didnt work, so that is another thing I would like to add.
Lastly, I wanted to create a quick walk cycle that Kyle would execute as the camera spun around him. I would also eventually like to create a crushing emote for him to do.
Kyle’s final still form can be viewed below.
